Sapphire or the blue stone is one of the most expensive gems in the world. Since time immemorial sapphires have featured in the jewelries of the royals and the rich. Although sapphires are mined in different parts of Asia, Australia, Africa and North America, but the gems from Kashmir, Sri Lanka and Burma are considered the best. A set of Kashmir sapphires weighing 20.88 and 26.66 carats, known as the Richelieu Sapphires, was sold at the Sotheby’s auction in Geneva in 2013 for a staggering $8,358,520. Valued at over $175,821 per carat, this was the world’s most expensive sapphire to be auctioned. The same auction also sold the second most expensive sapphire in the world, a 114 carat Burmese sapphire for $7,223,285.
